Using an Android Device in Catapult Thunder as a Network Capture Device

A spare smart phone can make for an excellent network capture device in Thunder with the correct app.

I posted in a recent article about the significance of Thunder 25’s Network Capture RTSP updates and its usefulness. I’ll show how to leverage that in a situation where having a stationary camera setup that can be set up quickly, and is extremely mobile and viable in many situations. I also used this configuration below via Catapult Focus Server with success, even using it with multi-angle capture.

  • Equipment Check: Video Capture Bag

The way I have my gear stowed away is broke down into several levels. First I have my trunk with all my video gear and then inside there I have several bags for specific areas. For example, I have a bag for gear that is just for the coaches office, a bag for the projector and also the gear that goes up with me to our video capture location. Not only does this keep things organized, but if I am out and a coach needs to grab something from my trunk they know where they can find it.

  • What idiocy did i get into with the 2025-2026 season?

My main goal here is to share my knowledge to other video coordinators/coaches/etc and I want to start this thing off with a post about the absolute insanity that I have cooked up.

I want to preface this by in the coming weeks I will be writing a more detailed guide on the items below if it is something of interest to any other Video staff that would like to try out next season.

  • Welcome!

Thanks for stopping by. I wanted to share some things I’ve picked up and learned throughout my years of being a video coach with the Spokane Chiefs. If you’d like more of a detailed past, take a look at the about section.

I’ve been involved in video coaching with the Spokane Chiefs since December of 2006. Through that time I’ve worked with Gamebreaker (2006-2010 or 11?) before we made the switch to Steva (2011-2021) and now have settled into Catapult Thunder since the 2022-2023 season.

My best skills and abilities are tech/IT focused and that has allowed me to bring that knowledge in ways that can be applied in different ways to the coaching staff & organization. I have been wanting to share this knowledge to anyone who is interested.

I have zero plans to make this website locked besides any sort of paywall. To be perfectly clear though I might have affiliate links for products on Amazon that I do recommend on my posts.

Thanks for checking Thinking Outside the Capture box out!
